Water Filter InformationLet me introduce myself and tell you about my experience with water filter information. You may find my background unusual and my connection to water filters a bit strange. But it is what it is! I was born during the Second World War in what was then the Belgian Congo (Later called Zaire and now the Democratic Republic of Congo). My father was from Philadelphia and my mother from New London, Connecticut. They had each gone single as missionaries and met in the Congo where they raised four children, I, David Langford, being the second born.
Childhood Experience of Filtered Water
I grew up knowing that water was not safe. It wasn't safe to swim in the rivers or lakes of the Congo and it wasn't safe to drink the water as you found it. I can remember always drinking boiled water that had then been filtered. Since gathering water filter information, I have learned that water filters, usually the ceramic type, were used by expatriates in the Third World long before they became popular in the United States or Canada. In the School of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, they teach that all of the lakes and rivers in the Congo carry Bilharziasis (Schistosomiasis) and other intestinal parasites. Most Congolese don't have the money to boil their water let along buy a filter. They live and die with intestinal parasites. My family moved to the Sudan for three years. There was more of a scarcity of water in the Sudan which boarders on the Sahara and the water we got was cloudy, often taken from holes dug in dried river beds. I can still remember the locally made filter we had behind our house. It was a huge clay pot that came to a point at the bottom. Water was poured into it and it would literally drip all night. By morning we might get 5 gallons of crystal clean water which was then boiled and filtered before drinking. Our family returned to the United States for one year after every five years in the Congo. It seemed too good to be true to be able to drink water straight from the tap. All except for the chlorine!
Raising A Family in Africa
History sometimes repeats itself! After spending high school, college and seminary in the United States, I married and took my young wife back to the Congo which now was independent of Belgium and was renamed Zaire. We too had four children and raised them to never drink unboiled and unfiltered water. They all survived! One went back to Africa to work with the Peace Corps for two years and one is currently working in agriculture in Madagascar.My wife was a practicing physician and I a teacher in a theological college. I found I had a gift for taking complicated subjects and teaching them in a simple and clear way. I was good at making things practical. It's this skill that I'm using on this site to give water filter information and to explain the complexities of contaminants in our tap water in America.
Discoveries about Water in the New World
In 1996, our family moved back to the United States and settled in New Jersey while our four children completed high school and college. I gradually became aware that even though tap water in the U.S. is wonderfully pure compared to water in the Congo, it is not nearly a clean as it can be. Not only am I turned off by the chlorine taste of tap water, but the number of contaminants and the variety of kinds of contaminants which pollute the water of the developed world are frightening to me.I still am troubled by the lack of clean water in much of Africa. One of my passions with this site is to eventually give valuable information on what's being done to help Third World people get clean water sources. There are ways for ordinary people like you and me to get involved and make a huge difference for hundreds, even thousands of people. It's estimated that there is still 1.1 billion people in the world who don't have access to clean drinking water!
Discovering the Wonderful World of Water Filters
More recently, I discovered there is a vast and wonderful world of water filters available to explore. There are all types of filters for all types of purposes. It's sort of like a jungle that I'm offering to take you through to get to your desired destination.This site will provide you with detailed and understandable water filter information on the whole science of water filters, the different types of filters and the different models. I realize that everyone of you comes with different needs and desires to the question of "What filter would suite me best?" My aim is to empower you with the information you need to make a wise decision about the best water filter for you and your family. You will see that I function more as a coach and teacher giving water filter information than as a sales person. I trust you will find this site easy to navigate and rich in information.
