Drinking Water Filters
... Solving the Puzzle

You may be wondering, “What kind of drinking water filters are best for me and my family?” You are not alone. A growing number of Americans are concerned about the quality of their tap water for drinking. One indication of this is the fact that Americans now buy $10 billion worth of drinking water each year, when not long ago we would never have considered spending hard earned dollars on drinking water! But is bottled water any better than tap water from the standpoint of purity? Or does it just taste better? Many of us have concluded that drinking water filters are a much better option. They offer better quality and much cheaper drinking water.

Who Needs the Information on This Site?

I have gathered this information for you if you are dissatisfied with drinking your tap water. You are looking for other options. In particular, you are looking for the best kind of drinking water filter for your family’s needs. So, who would benefit from the information on this site? You would, if you are looking for answers to one or more of the following questions:

  • What are the drinking water alternatives to tap water?
  • Which kind of drinking water filter is best for you? Carbon block? Reverse osmosis? Distilled? Or what?
  • Which particular filter model would best respond to your needs?
  • Which filter will give you peace of mind knowing that your water is truly safe?
  • Which filter gives you the best value for your money?

What Is This Site About?

Once I have completed the building of this site, you will be equipped to put together the Drinking Water Puzzle for yourself. You see, there are many complexities about answering the question, What is the best drinking water for me and my family? It’s like a big puzzle!

The first piece of the puzzle is to understand the problem. In what ways is our tap water contaminated? What are the particular organic and inorganic contaminants that we need to be concerned about? And then what are the best ways of removing those impurities from our water.

The second piece of the puzzle is to look at the different options open to us for drinking water: tap water, boiled water, bottled water or filtered water. Which piece of the puzzle best responds to your needs?

Since filtered water is perhaps the best option for drinking water, the third piece of the puzzle is to look more carefully at the different kinds of drinking water filters there are. I will describe how each of the major kinds of filters works to remove impurities. We’ll describe carbon filters, reverse osmosis filters, distilled water filters, and ultraviolet filters.

Then we get down into examining the multiple makes and models of filters. I give you information on the leading filters available in each category and I help you compare them in terms of what impurities they remove or don’t remove. I also compare filters according to what your water will cost per gallon if you use a particular filter.

The fourth piece of the puzzle is where you decide, in the light of all this information, which filter fits your needs the best. You have multiple considerations to take into account such as the particular contaminants you are concerned about removing, the size of your family, the cost per gallon it would cost and what would it take to give you peace of mind. We help you individualize your choice.

Why Have I Provided You with This Information?

Let me introduce myself. I come with a rather different perspective from that of the average site on water filters that you will find on the internet. I was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo to American parents. I lived there till I was 14 years old and then returned to work there over a period of an additional 24 years.

I’m deeply aware of the dangers of the wrong kind of drinking water. We used various methods to make our water drinkable. Every time I came to America with my family, I was amazed and felt blessed that I could drink water straight from the tap! I was perfectly content with tap water for many years, except for the chlorinated taste.

Then a friend, who was in the water industry, told me that much bottled water is no safer than tap water and some of it actually comes from the tap! Hence my story of interest in drinking water.

You will find that on this site, I function more as a coach than as a technician or sales person. My aim is to help you identify the concerns that you have for your region or for your family and then provide you with the information which will equip you to make a good choice. I function as a coach both through the information I offer and my personal availability to answer your questions by email or by phone.

As a former college professor in the Congo, I’m good at doing careful research and good at presenting it in a clear and understandable way. I know how to take complicated subjects and simplify them in practical ways. In short, I am good at coaching others in putting puzzles together.

Enjoy the adventure!
